Sorrento is among the seaside resorts with the most ‘family friendly’ accommodation in Italy. The research, carried out by Hundredrooms, the famous online company that buys tourist accommodation worldwide. It was carried out on the occasion of World Family Day (celebrated on 15 May). It showed a higher number of ‘family-friendly’ accommodations in seaside resorts than in big cities.
Among the model locations is Sorrento, where over 16.2 per cent of tourist flats have services and features much sought after by families; such as outdoor spaces, washing machines, cots, outdoor areas where children can play freely, and even spaces for animals. Surprisingly, last in Campania is Naples: in the regional capital, ‘family-friendly’ accommodation only reaches 4.1%.
The latest ISTAT data show that, after a period of stagnation caused mostly by the economic crisis, Italian families have returned to spending. Indeed, since 2015, household spending on accommodation and food services has gradually increased. This is a growth of 11% compared to the previous year. That is, an average of EUR 122.39 per month spent by a household, compared to EUR 110.26 per month in 2014.
Sorrento is family friendly! Among the most family-friendly places in Italy are Viareggio and Formia. Which have over 29% family friendly accommodation and over 6% accommodation with cots available. There is also over 20% in Gaeta and on the island of Elba. While the Sardinian resort of Alghero, with its 19%, comes close to this figure. Family-friendly accommodation in Taormina and Sorrento is around 16%. Holiday flats with cots, on the other hand, fluctuate between 8% and 9%.
The figures are much lower in large cities such as Milan, Turin and Naples where they do not go beyond 5-6%, while in Florence the figure is 6.3%. A little better, but not too much better, are Rome, Palermo and Bologna, where family-friendly accommodation is around 7%. While those with cots are 19.5% in Rome, 11% in Palermo and 2.8% in Bologna.
